Once again bad weather is taking its toll on the TIA equipment (which is located high on the mountains to the east of Ukiah). This means that stations may be off for a period of time, or may go on and off, depending on conditions.

What happens is that antennas get loaded with snow causing them to malfunction or break. Also, wind, water, ice, and animals often cause damage. From time to time, power surges wil blow fuses or ruin equipment.

Keep in mind that TIA is run by volunteers only. We have no paid employees (nor do we receive enough donations to make that possible). So, we try to keep the channels running as best as possible, but it's always a battle against what mother nature throws at us. In addition, there are greater levels of interference from other services that can cause channels to come and go.

Jan 2012

We are testing two new digital channel transmitters. If you have a newer model TV, go to channel setup and rescan for new channels. You should see three new KQED (PBS) digital transmissions. Notice that they are in high definition. Also, you might see two KCRA channels, although we are still working on better reception for that.

Important Facts:

  • TIA provides free over-the-air television to Ukiah and Redwood valleys.
  • Programs include ABC, CBS, PBS, FOX and more.
  • TIA is funded entirely by your donations.
  • TIA is non-profit and operated by volunteers.
  • If you're watching TV with an antenna, then you're watching TIA.

About Digital TV in Ukiah:

The FCC allows TIA to convert the incoming DTV signals to analog; however, later in 2010 we expect to begin digital transmissions for many of our stations. More to come.

If you have a good antenna, you will notice that the picture has improved a lot! For many viewers, it's a perfect picture now.

However, at times, TV signals may "break up into little boxes" or be lost (no signal). Usually this is temporary, but depending on the weather, the condition could last a few hours or days. Unfortunately, this is how digital TV operates. That's considered technical "progress".

We work hard to keep as many stations on air as we can!

Here are other DTV details for Ukiah.
