Ukiah TIA Plans ClarifiedPRESS RELEASE - For immediate release The Television Improvement Association (TIA) of Ukiah today clarified their plans for how the new digital TV signals (DTV) will be transmitted in Ukiah and Redwood Valley. As many Ukiah residents know, on June 12, 2009, TV stations will be switching off their analog signals and moving to digital. TIA has been retransmitting these analog signals from Cow Mountain for more than 50 years. Fortunately for TIA TV viewers, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) does not require low power stations to switch to digital. This means TIA can remain in analog, and TIA viewers will receive TV stations in the same way as they have for years. TIA president Carl Sassenrath wants to make it clear: "TIA viewers DO NOT need to connect a DTV converter box in order to receive TIA TV signals. Ukiah residents can ignore the notices and ads shown on TV stations that viewers will require a converter." In fact, if the DTV converter is not of the correct type, it will actually block the TIA signals. You must use a converter with "analog pass-through". (TIA announced this on its website in June of 2008.) Newer TV sets will also work fine because they detect both analog and digital. If you already own a DTV converter, store it away for later, in case you move or if TIA switches to digital at some future date. Also note that TIA does expect disruptions to TV transmissions for many weeks, as new equipment is installed, and as the bay area broadcasters move their frequencies. TIA has purchased the necessary equipment and will do its best to track all changes and keep as many stations on the air as possible. TIA is a non-profit, community owned, volunteer-supported organization established in 1956 to provide over-the-air TV programs to the residents of the Ukiah area.
